The global Alliance exists for one reason – to end AIDS.

This is an ambitious goal, but one we believe is realistic. When we look back over 2012 we can be proud of the progress we have made.

The Alliance is made up of 40 independent, national organisations3. Our collective determination means that despite another challenging year for the HIV response4 we reached 69% more people in 2012 than the year before, improving the lives of 4.7 million people and reaching the ambitious targets in our 2010-12 strategy5.

The stories we bring you here include a mapping exercise in Burkina Faso which is helping to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV; work to reach fishermen in Malaysia with harbourside needle and syringe exchanges; and a campaign to stop governments across Latin America ignoring the senseless murders of transgender women.

This document contains the Report of the Trustees, the independent auditors report to the members of International HIV/AIDS Alliance and a consolidated statement of financial activities for the year ended 31 December 2012.

C’est un objectif ambitieux, mais nous pensons qu’il est réaliste. Si nous faisons le bilan de l’année 2012, nous pouvons être fiers des progrès que nous avons réalisés.

L’Alliance est constituée de 40 organisations nationales indépendantes . Grâce à notre détermination collective et malgré une année difficile pour la réponse au VIH2, nous avons atteint 69 % de personnes supplémentaires en 2012 par rapport à l’année précédente, améliorant ainsi la vie de 4,7 millions de personnes et réalisant les objectifs ambitieux de notre stratégie 2010-20123.

Les histoires que nous présentons ici comportment notamment un exercice de cartographie au Burkina Faso qui contribue à prévenir la transmission du VIH de la mère à l’enfant, des initiatives pour atteindre les pêcheurs en Malaisie grâce à des programmes d’échanges d’aiguilles et de seringues aux abords d’un port et une campagne visant à empêcher les gouvernements d’Amérique latine de fermer les yeux sur les meurtres insensés de femmes transgenres.

Nuestra determinación colectiva se traduce en que, a pesar de haber sido otro año difícil para la respuesta al VIH, en 2012 llegamos a un 69% más de personas que el año anterior: mejoramos las vidas de 4,7 millones de personas y cumplimos los ambiciosos objetivos de nuestra estrategia 2010-12.

Las historias que compartimos en esta publicación incluyen un ejercicio de mapeo en Burkina Faso, que está ayudando a prevenir la transmisión vertical del VIH; el trabajo realizado para llegar a los pescadores en Malasia con intercambios de agujas y jeringas en los puertos; y una campaña para que en toda América Latina los gobiernos dejen de ignorar los asesinatos sin sentido de mujeres trans.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the greatest threats to the health of people living with HIV in resource-poor settings. There is an urgent need to engage communities and build the capacity of community-based organisations (CBOs) to respond to the burden of TB on people living with HIV and to mobilise more global, national, and local resources to fight TB. This guide responds to requests by CBOs for information and guidance on TB integration in HIV programming. It is based on direct experiences in working with HIV service organisations in the field on TB advocacy, communication, and community/social mobilisation activity planning. It is meant to be a practical, hands-on tool you can use in your organisation to plan and implement realistic and effective TB activities in the communities where you work.

The Link Up programme, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people most affected by HIV and to promote the realisation of young

people’s sexual and reproductive rights. This Project Overview describes the three-year programme (2013-2015) which aims to improve the integration of SRHR interventions into existing community- and facility-based HIV programmes, and vice versa, in Bangladesh, Burundi, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Uganda.

The Link Up programme, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people most affected by HIV and to promote the realisation of young people’s sexual and reproductive rights.

This policy briefing summarises key concepts relating to the integration of HIV and SRHR services and discusses current provisions for integration in the five countries: Bangladesh, Burundi, Ethiopia, Myanmar and Uganda.

It includes recommendations for how policymakers, donors and civil society actors can facilitate service integration and shape policies to better reflect young people’s needs rights and aspirations.

The UK government has this week announced that it is to cut direct aid to South Africa by 2015. Given that the Department for International Development’s priorities in the country in recent years have been to tackle HIV and to address maternal mortality, this is worrying news for the future of the epidemic there. As thousands of delegates travel to Malaysia to attend the 2013 Women Deliver conference at the end of this month, Shaleen - an outreach worker at a drop-in centre for sex workers – talks about the work she does to empower women to demand quality, user friendly integrated sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV services. This report summarises the results of site assessments on HIV and drug use in China, India, Indonesia, Kenya and Malaysia. The assessments were conducted by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and their teams of experts in four technical areas:

• HIV prevention services for people who inject drugs
• HIV and drug-related policy and environment
• organisational development issues
• monitoring and evaluation of interventions.

The assessments were conducted to guide planning for the Community Action on Harm Reduction (CAHR) project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of the Netherlands and implemented by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. The assessments focused on the Alliance’s lead partners in implementation of the CAHR project and also focused on the sub-recipients (implementing partners) of these five organisations, along with an in-country situation assessment.
