SAA kicks of for children's health
As the World cup gets underway in South Africa, the world's spotlight is on this continent. On African Child Day on 16 June, Action for Global Health – including SAA - reminds us of what should not be forgotten: every day 25,000 children still die mainly from preventable causes, most of them are being African.
Together with MEP Michael Cashman we will launch a new online campaign, the football game ‘Kick off … for children’s health,’ to call for urgent action in the fight against child mortality.
The event is taking place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on June 16th, 18:00-19:30, in room C2.1.
AIDS treatment gap widening in Sub-Saharan Africa: what is the EU doing?
On 23 June 2010, from 12:30-14:00 in the European Parliament (Brussels), the European Parliament Working Group on Innovation, Access to Medicines and Poverty-Related Diseases will host a lunch debate on the “AIDS treatment gap widening in Sub-Saharan Africa: what is the European Union doing?”. The meeting will be chaired by Michael Cashman MEP and it will bring together Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Stop AIDS Alliance (SAA), other civil society representatives and the Global Fund to present their concerns in a debate with representatives of the European Commission and the incoming Belgian Presidency of the EU.MSF will present the main findings of its recent report “No Time to Quit: HIV/AIDS Treatment Gap Widening in Africa”, analysing eight countries (Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Kenya, Uganda, DRC ) over the past year, highlighting the HIV/AIDS treatment crisis widening in sub-Saharan Africa and the consequent risks for the life of people affected by the disease The European Commission and the European Union’s Member States are both donors to the Global Fund and use bilateral channels for HIV/AIDS interventions in third countries. However, it is increasingly difficult to know what funding goes to them; as part of the aid effectiveness agenda, the Commission and many Member States are moving towards (sector) budget support modalities, which by definition are not earmarked. SAA will give a presentation on the overall EU tends in financing health and HIV interventions.
