GFATM Mid Term Review in Caceres, Spain
The donors of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria (GF), the most important institution to finance programs against the three poverty pandemics met in Caceres, Spain on March 30-31, at the Mid-Term Review of the Fund.
Civil Society met two days before, on the 28th and 29th of March, in the same place for a formative and mobilization conference to take a stance, share visions and to reflect about how we could face the Fund’s financial gap, its weaknesses and the future challenges raised to fight the three diseases.
A key point that was identified at the forum is the need for civil society working on the three diseases to work in a more coherent way when advocating towards donors and the GFATM. Currently there is still a lot of parallel work which is done among the three diseases, each with their own figures and solutions. It was also mentioned that civil society needs to be more pro-active towards influencing donor priorities rather than following the priorities set by donors.
SAA will continue to play a role in advocating for GFATM issues at the EU institutional level as well as linking up with activists in other EU Member States in order to coordinate our messages, also in follow up to the discussions with GFATM to better communicate amongst ourselves
